Need To Know This Week

The Buzz and The Fuzz

It was all go at the outdoor range last Saturday with a visit from the Police and a swarm of bees. Although it may have looked like a sting, the two incidents were unconnected.

A member of the public called the Police after seeing one of our archers walking up the maunga carrying a barebow and wearing their quiver. Although the archer was not breaking any rules, in the interests of being a good neighbour, let’s all make sure we carry our bows de-strung (or in a bag/case) with quivers off until we reach the range.

Later that same afternoon one of our archers noticed a swarm of bees had gathered in a tree high above the 35m line. Thankfully member Rob Leenheer – also a beekeeper – was shooting at the time. Although Rob couldn’t take the bees himself, he posted a message on the local bee chat group and another apiarist came to remove the swarm.

It is swarming season right now, so if you see a swarm, check out the Auckland Beekeepers Club ‘Report a Swarm’service. I don’t want to drone on, but I assume they have a lot of workers.
