Mountain Green Archery Club (MGAC) has been promoting target archery in its current location (on the summit of Mount Albert, Auckland) for over 70 years. Since its inception in the 1940’s, the club has hosted and continues to host compound, recurve, crossbow and longbow archers.
MGAC is a friendly group of archers at all levels, including international competitors, national champions, people who love tournaments, people who don’t like tournaments, beginners, people who know a lot about archery, and people who need more practice. We all love archery.
MGAC is a member of the Auckland District Archery Association (ADAA) and is the only club in Auckland to have both an indoor and outdoor range.

Club Archery
MGAC welcomes all archers, from absolute beginners through to experienced archers competing at international level.
Regular club activities for members are organised by the Club Captain(s). These activities are listed in the Events section and calendar of the website as well as on the club’s Facebook page.
We welcome all new members!
If you have never done archery before, we suggest you go through a Beginners Course/Lessons prior to joining.
If you have previous relevant archery experience, have done a Beginners Course at MGAC or another club, or are a member of another club, come along to a scheduled club shoot and have a chat. Please understand that we will ask for details of your training, and may ask to check your archery skills in person with a brief test, before we approve your membership.
Youth Archery
Mountain Green Archery Club has a very strong Youth division. Youth sessions are run on Sunday mornings. A particular archery round is scheduled for an entire month, and scoresheets are collected each week and recorded. Archers can come along and just shoot for enjoyment, or they can set their own goals and check their progress on a weekly basis.
The Youth archers’ weekly shoot is also part of a nationwide junior archery league, where each archer’s highest score for the month is submitted to Archery NZ’s national Youth Coordinator. The Coordinator collects scores from clubs around the country to produce a national results table for each month.

Indoor venue
In 2014, Mountain Green opened an Indoor Venue on Royal Road, Massey. The Indoor Venue is a great asset, particularly with Auckland’s unpredictable weather. The Indoor Venue is in the basement of the Waitakere Badminton Centre and has its own set of Rules of Use and Shooting Schedule.
Parking is at the rear of the building. The entrance door is on the motorway side of the complex. Most importantly, the compound archery targets are very closely set near the entrance door. If the Archery In Progress sign is hanging on the door, you must knock first and wait for someone to open the door for you. Details on how to find the Indoor Venue can be found in on the Contact Us page.
Outdoor venue
In 2014, Mountain Green opened an Indoor Venue on Royal Road, Massey. We do have a responsibility to our landlords, the Auckland City Council, and to the general public with whom we share the mountain. As such, we ask that all beginner archers – regardless of age – need to complete our six-week Beginners Course before they can become club members. All club members are required to sign in and out (in the club’s logbook) when they are shooting on the archery range. We have set Hours of Use, determined by the Auckland City Council, to which we must adhere as part of our lease agreement. These are displayed on the sign at the entrance to the archery field, as well as being listed on this website.
The club’s facilities are for the use of the club members and guests of the club. If there are archers who are not members but who wish to use the club’s facilities, this should be arranged beforehand by contacting the Club Management first (click here). There is a Casual Use Fee for those who have permission to do so.
Our History

The Mt Albert Historical Society has written a fabulous article on the history of the Mountain Green Archery Club, which can be found on their website.
We have also been sent some memories of the archery club from the late 1950s. Former Field Captain Bryan Gillingham’s memories and photos can be found here.
